Sonenstein Wraps Up The End of Empire

Playwright Peter Sonenstein, recipient of a 2022 festival Artists’ Award in Drama, is putting the finishing touches on his multimedia staged reading The End of Empire. The performance, which will take place on Saturday, September 23, on the main stage on the Guilford Green, explores the impact of technology on society.

Loosely based on Oedipus Rex, the play follows executives at the world’s largest social media platform as it examines the rapid evolution of digital technology and its effects through the eyes of those who control it.

The show is directed by Kevin Michael Reed and features a multi-panel video wall on which video and graphical elements will be displayed. Reed has been working with Rodolfo Villalobos to create the video content.

The cast, some of whom are seen here with Sonenstein (center, in green shirt) after a recent rehearsal, are Kim Carlson, Pranav Dev, Jay Eddy, Barbara Hentschel, Margaret Mann, Sam Plattus, Steffon Sampson and Michael Souney. Theatre critic Tim Leininger will moderate a post-show discussion.
