2023 Festival Features VisABLE Dance Residency

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Do you love to dance?

This year's festival will feature a VisABLE Dance residency that will bring together people with a wide range of physical, emotional and mental abilities for a series of workshops and a performance. Using the language of dance, the program will encourage participants to discover and express their individual voices, and in the process make powerful and meaningful connections with themselves and one another. Led by expressive arts consultant and movement artist Kerry Kincy, the program comprises three 90-minute workshops followed by a public performance during the festival this September.

The workshops will be held on Sundays, August 27, September 10 and September 17 at 11:30 a.m. at the Shoreline Ballet studio in Guilford. Participation is free but requires preregistration through the GreenStage Guilford website; participants can attend one or more workshops. Anyone 13 years and older is welcome; classes are limited to 20 people. The performance will take place on Sunday, September 24, at 11:30 a.m. on GreenStage 2 on the Guilford Green; it’s open to anyone regardless of participation in the workshops, and audience participation is enthusiastically encouraged.

“Movement and dance are vehicles with which we can learn to imagine, create and realize new perspectives of the world around us,” says Kincy, director of New Haven Ballet’s Shared Ability program, visiting lecturer at Wesleyan University and founder of the Free Center community impact incubator in Middletown. “This program is an opportunity for people of all abilities to take positive risks in movement without fear of ridicule and without the limitations of a predetermined aesthetic idea.”

She adds, “This residency/workshop/performance supports participants in finding their place in the greater community with a sense of joy and self-awareness. The experience of the work will extend beyond the dancers and reach all who witness the creative process.”
