Laura Thoma
Letter To My Soul
2024 Artist Grant Recipient
An original play by Shoreline playwright Laura Thoma, Letter To My Soul is a compelling work that tells the story of two queer women from different countries and different times—one living in the 1930s, the other in the present day. Emerging from the pages of a book, one woman reaches across time to speak to the other, initiating an examination of the beliefs and values of two distinct eras, challenging perspectives typically seen through the lens of a heteronormative culture.
With its thought-provoking dialogue between queer writers over space and time, Thoma’s play invites the audience into an exploration of evolving attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors related to gender and sexual identity. The play delves into themes of isolation, belonging, and connection to the larger thread of human history—both personal and societal. The performance will also feature an audience conversation, providing an opportunity for further reflection and discussion.
